Hinemoa Te Taiawatea was born in 1868.
She met Kennedy Brennan after the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886.
They married in 1887 and had 4 children:
Silas b. 1889
Marama b. 1890
Roimata b. 1891
Rewi b. 1893.
Hinemoa was a strongly political woman.
She came from a family where Maori women leaders
used the authority given to them by their people to defend tribal lands
which were being confiscated by British troops and European settlers.
Maori women tried to use the Native Land Courts (1865)
to confirm and reatin their interest in Tribal Lands.
They were passionate letter writes to government.
In 1892, Te Kotahitanga (Maori Parliament) was established.
Women played an active part.
They could speak but not vote or stand as members.
In 1893, meri Mangakahia put a motion before Te Kotahitanga
on behalf of women seeking the vote.
The motion failed.
Instead, they organised themselves to tackle problems,
such as land, health education through Nga Komiti Wahine,
a national network of tribally based committees.

For reflection ...
Hinemoa fought for equal rights for Maori women.
Do we have equality and justice for Maori women now?
Do we still discriminate against all women in the workplace?
How can we change this?
