Dollmaking is just one of many, many creative activities that can assist healing in an holistic way. Dollmaking has transformed my life.

Creative block. Inertia. Procrastination. An infinite variety of names to describe an inability to make a start on a creative endeavour. Noah Scalin has many suggestions to 'get unstuck'. Setting yourself a time limit is one. I tried this in my 'Inner Child' series and in 'The Prayer Flag Project' ... no self-criticism or judgement ... simply creating within boundaries. Powerful. The earthquakes that struck, and continue to strike Christchurch are devastating. We often hear of the stories of stress and trauma and despair and daily struggle. They are valid, real and should tear at our heartstrings, our purse strings and our political voice. But through this adversity, there is also amazing creativity ... how people transform their shattered lives and shattered environment. Skateboarders used the devastated environment to create new challenges ... and cause us to pause and see the damage through new eyes. What adversity has generated creativity in me? Some lives inspire us. People who persist. People who are diligent. People who are attentive. People whose everyday small actions bring about huge change. People who live their lives honestly, humbly, wholeheartedly. I hope to catch a little of that inspiration. Any creative endeavour has the power to heal; to inspires; to invite attentiveness and mindfulness; to help us become fully human. Sometimes we need professional help to overcome difficulties in our lives. Sometimes we simply need the unconditional love of our friends and family. And sometimes we are able to heal ourselves .... through good self-care, meditation, creativity. Living with depression, struggling with divorce, I found that a 'self-healing kit' is a wonderful aid to my well-being. The patience, the commitment, the vision, the imagination, of artists who make magic out of shadow inspire me. There are some New Zealanders who inspire simply by being who they are ... poet Sam Hunt is one. They have the ability to express the essence of what it is to be a New Zealander. They understand the human condition, and by their creativity, help us to understand it too. Inspiration is all around us. Translating inspiration into action can be a little more daunting. We become judgmental of ourselves. We compare our ideas to those of others. We procrastinate. We over-commit ourselves. We make excuses. aaaahhhhh....... Sometimes we need to give ourselves a push ... challenge ourselves .... not big, not aiming at perfection. Simply an excuse to create ... freely, playfully. I have tried this with my year long participation in The Prayer Flag Project, and now in The Quotidian Doll. On a smaller scale, I did a thirty day project with The Inner Child. I recommend it whole-heartedly. And then ... I found this talk by Emma Rogan ... Be inspired and encouraged. www.100daysproject.co.nz |
