Miriam Ruberl is a talented artist, gifted entrepreneur, passionate advocate for emerging artists, an exciting lateral thinker, and a very interesting person. She is an inspiration. I am blessed to have her as a friend. I am a textile artist and have a love affair with all things textile. I try to use recycled and pre-loved materials in my art works. Even so, can this small action mitigate the effects of the textile industry on my environment? Has the interest in recycling slowed down the production of textiles? Am I responsible in my use of dyes and chemicals and cleaning agents? Do I investigate the origin of materials I use e.g. is the sari silk I use produced ethically in just working environments? Brian Potiki and Jill Walker are amazing, generous performance artists enriching our community with their love, their art, and their adaptation of local story and song. Their passion enthuses, enthralls and entertains. I am blessed to call them 'friend'. They empower me, encourage me, and inspire me. I would not be the heartfelt doll maker I am without their vision and support. Arohanui, Brian and Jill. "Prayer and art are passionate acts of will.
One wants to transcend and enhance the will’s normal possibilities. Art like prayer is a hand outstretched in the darkness, seeking for some touch of grace which will transform it into a hand that bestows gifts. Prayer means casting oneself into the miraculous rainbow that stretches between becoming and dying, to be utterly consumed in it, in order to bring its infinite radiance to bed in the frail little cradle of one’s own existence." in "Conversations with Kafka" by Gustav Janouch Ally Rogers is a gifted multi-talented artist. I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide or press an ear against its hive. I say drop a mouse into a poem and watch him probe his way out, or walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a light switch. I want them to waterski across the surface of a poem waving at the author’s name on the shore. But all they want to do is tie the poem to a chair with rope and torture a confession out of it. They begin beating it with a hose to find out what it really means. by Billy Collins |
