BURDENED

What keeps me down?
What burdens me?
What takes my life?
What overwhelms me?
I was profoundly affected by the film "The Secret Life of Bees".
In one poignant scene, May, burdened by the sorrow in the world,
takes her own life, weighted with stones.
It caused me to look at what was weighing me down, drowning me.
I drew several simple 'paper doll' shapes onto pink polar fleece.
Sandwiched between two layers, were a variety of battings,
including lint, an old jersey and cotton wadding.
The face of each figure was covered with an X, signifying my loss of identity, my loss of self.
On the chest of each doll is a pebble, wrapped with yarn or string.
Tucked into the twine is a note, just as May tucked notes into her own 'wailing wall'.
