Matariki
is an important event in the New Zealand calendar.
It is the Maori New Year,
when the nine stars of Pleiades appear on the horizon.
Helium Gallery
has invited artists from around the Rotorua region
to use a kite shape as inspiration
to create ten works of art.

I have created "Seven Sisters and Three Hunters",
interpreting the legend of Orion chasing the Seven Sisters
across the heavens.
The Seven Sisters are dressed in glittering silver,
unaware of the Three Hunters dressed in black
and armed with a bow.
The kite shape is traced in silver sequins and beads
on the black velvet covered bases of the hunters.

THE ENERGY WITHIN

Picture
Steam Punk dolls, "The Dollmaker and the Conserve Cantavit" will be exhibited
at the Rotorua Lakes Council Galleria.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am a doll artist and doll interpreter,
using doll making as a healing and transformative experience.
This passion is expressed through my Heartfelt Dolls, companions for my journey.

I have called this series "The Doll Maker and Conserve Cantavit",
immortalising my experience with boutique production company, Jam TV,
filming people of passion in Rotorua for “This Town”.
There is a wonderful energy that flows and animates the creative spirit
when we are open to new experiences, spaces and places;
when we participate in our daily lives consciously and mindfully;
when we engage with our human and natural environments;
when we treasure and nurture that which binds us; and
when we acknowledge the rich traditions which inform and shape our lives.
Creating these Steam Punk dolls was a wonderful opportunity
to use items that I have been gifted over the years;
to inject beloved items into a new story;
to contemplate an experience that was both surreal and profound; and
to push the boundaries of my doll making.
While making each doll, with its unique personality,
I came to deeply appreciate the gifted-ness and creativity of the crew.
I am filled with gratitude for this glimpse into the world of TV and film.

“I  NEVER FELT SO GOOD!”

During  our lives, we are sometimes
unexpectedly,
  surprisingly,
given the opportunity to say,
“I never felt so good!”

Perhaps after a physical, emotional or spiritual trauma,
after  the recovery, the healing, the transformation,
we become acutely, gratefully aware, that
“I never felt so good!”

This is the moment when
we punch the air or dance or raise our arms in praise;
when  we pause;
and a deep heartfelt gratitude rises from the centre of our being.
It is both a still point and a turning point.

These dolls reflect such moments in my life:
from  woundedness to healing;
from  brokenness to transformation;
from pain to joy;
from  desolation to consolation.

Each doll I have chosen for this exhibition captures
a  moment of transition;
a  moment of movement;
a  moment of self-assuredness;
 a moment of playfuless;
a moment of connectivity;
or
  a moment of release.

They  are a unique perspective on my life.
May  they bring a new perspective to your life.

This Summer The Arts Village will have 5 new artists in our ground floor studio spaces
up until the BluesFeast Trust brings Rhythm Rotorua to town in late January.

Angela Croft, Ally Rogers, Paula Kerslake, Mary Whalley and Liz Pearce
will each have their own studio from which to create their works of art over the coming summer months.

The Rotorua Potters Group is also looking to run classes for any budding potters during summer.

We are excited to once again have the Open Studios Project operating out of our purpose built venue –
our sincere thanks goes out to the Rotorua Trust for their on-going support of the project.

So come visit Heartfelt Dolls at The Arts Village, Hinemaru Street, Rotorua
from December 16th, 2013 until January 23rd, 2014.

        LIBRARY LIVE! @ ROTORUA PUBLIC LIBRARY

I was privileged to be invited to exhibit and talk about my dolls at the Rotorua Public Library on August 15th, 2013.

the interaction with visitors reconnecting with dolls in their past,
and introducing people to new and varied aspects of doll making.
