Matariki
is an important event in the New Zealand calendar. It is the Maori New Year, when the nine stars of Pleiades appear on the horizon. Helium Gallery has invited artists from around the Rotorua region to use a kite shape as inspiration to create ten works of art. I have created "Seven Sisters and Three Hunters", interpreting the legend of Orion chasing the Seven Sisters across the heavens. The Seven Sisters are dressed in glittering silver, unaware of the Three Hunters dressed in black and armed with a bow. The kite shape is traced in silver sequins and beads on the black velvet covered bases of the hunters. |

THE ENERGY WITHIN
Steam Punk dolls, "The Dollmaker and the Conserve Cantavit" will be exhibited

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am a doll artist and doll interpreter,
using doll making as a healing and transformative experience.
This passion is expressed through my Heartfelt Dolls, companions for my journey.
I have called this series "The Doll Maker and Conserve Cantavit",
immortalising my experience with boutique production company, Jam TV,
filming people of passion in Rotorua for “This Town”.
There is a wonderful energy that flows and animates the creative spirit
when we are open to new experiences, spaces and places;
when we participate in our daily lives consciously and mindfully;
when we engage with our human and natural environments;
when we treasure and nurture that which binds us; and
when we acknowledge the rich traditions which inform and shape our lives.
Creating these Steam Punk dolls was a wonderful opportunity
to use items that I have been gifted over the years;
to inject beloved items into a new story;
to contemplate an experience that was both surreal and profound; and
to push the boundaries of my doll making.
While making each doll, with its unique personality,
I came to deeply appreciate the gifted-ness and creativity of the crew.
I am filled with gratitude for this glimpse into the world of TV and film.

“I NEVER FELT SO GOOD!”
During our lives, we are sometimes
unexpectedly,
surprisingly,
given the opportunity to say,
“I never felt so good!”
Perhaps after a physical, emotional or spiritual trauma,
after the recovery, the healing, the transformation,
we become acutely, gratefully aware, that
“I never felt so good!”
This is the moment when
we punch the air or dance or raise our arms in praise;
when we pause;
and a deep heartfelt gratitude rises from the centre of our being.
It is both a still point and a turning point.
These dolls reflect such moments in my life:
from woundedness to healing;
from brokenness to transformation;
from pain to joy;
from desolation to consolation.
Each doll I have chosen for this exhibition captures
a moment of transition;
a moment of movement;
a moment of self-assuredness;
a moment of playfuless;
a moment of connectivity;
or
a moment of release.
They are a unique perspective on my life.
May they bring a new perspective to your life.
