HEARTFELT DOLLS... companions for the journey

HAIR TODAY
I am a maker of dolls, or perhaps more accurately, representations, reflections, explorations, and musings using the human form as a springboard.
Sometimes pretty. Sometimes not.
Sometimes finished. Sometimes not.
Sometimes original. Sometimes not.
Sometimes for sale. Sometimes not.
Never perfect.
Nearly always made in a group or series.
For me, doll-making is a transformative experience;
a healing experience;
an anti-depressant.
It is more about process, reflection, meditation and attentiveness
to myself, my whanau, my community, than about product.
Doll-making is a delightful, life-giving, soul-nurturing, thought-provoking blend
of journalling, art therapy, expressive therapy and self-care.
Sometimes, a doll demands to be started AND finished. Sometimes, simply the design, the resourcing, the note-making satisfies the need to create. But this is, in itself, a creative process.
My dolls are an outward expression of a hidden, silent, unknown, hitherto un-revealed inward journey.
They are an encounter. They are sacrament.
I make dolls to evoke a response, to make a statement, to inform, to empathise.
I make dolls for their own sake, for play, for the pure joy of creating.
I make dolls as a response to a random challenge: a word, idea or place.
I make dolls to challenge long-held beliefs; to honour life-long practices; to give these a modern context, to make them relevant or shelve them until it is their season.
I make dolls to remember: a photo in doll form.
I make dolls to express grief.
I make dolls to celebrate change.
I make dolls to try to make sense of the inexplicable and to provide a springboard for change and healing.
THANK YOU to all who take the time to visit this website. I am honoured to share my story with you.
