LIVING WITH CANCER

Cancer touches all of us ...
family members, friends, neighbours, strangers, medical professionals,
appeals through the media,
stories of people overcoming the odds,
stories of people living with cancer.

People hearing the diagnosis,
deciding on a course of treatment,
living through the changes to their lives.

We all have a role ...
what is yours?
I was inspired by this advertisement in its shades of gray
to create a series of dolls, I tongue-in-cheek call "Shades of Gray".
(I have deliberately used the American spelling of gray to differentiate it from '50 Shades of Grey'.)

Each doll is made from gray polar fleece,
and is dressed in clothing created from gray fabrics.
Each doll is a tangible reminder of the presence of cancer in our world.

On each doll is a hint of yellow: a sign of hope, of new life, of promise.

Each doll carries a daffodil.
"Daffodils have meanings of faith, honesty, truth, forgiveness, and forthrightness.
They are ever vigilant in returning each spring,
and with their return we are reminded that their beauty
is capable of following on the
shirttails of even the harshest winters (or tribulations
)."

there's only hope,
and that is to go into it
and through it.

Melody Beattie in "Giving Thanks" by MJ Ryan

ROSE

PEACE

It does not mean to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.
It means to be in the midst of those things
and still
be calm in your heart.

NADYUISKA

Picture
Nadyuiska is a Slovakian name meaning hope.

"My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going,
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
                                                And I know that,
                                            if I do this,
you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always,
though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death.
                                        I will not fear,
for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone."

Thomas Merton in "Thoughts in Solitude"

HOPE

Picture
'Hope' is the Thing with Feathers

'Hope' is the thing with feathers -
That perches on the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird -
That kept so many warm -

I've heard it in the chilliest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
                                                   Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of Me
.

                                                Emily Dickinson

A little more sure-footedly than I,
Be patient with my stumbling then
And know that only as I do my best and try

If through experience, your soul
Has gained heights which I
As yet in dim-lit vision see,
Hold out your hand and point the way,

And walk a mile with me."

How shall I pray?
Are tears prayers, Lord?
Are screams prayers,
   or groans
      or sighs
         or curses?

Can trembling hands be lifted to you,
   or clenched fists
or the cold sweat that trickles down my back
or the cramps that knot my stomach?

Will you accept my prayers, Lord,
                                                        my real prayers,
rooted in the muck and mud and rock of my life,
and not just the poetry, cut-flower, gracefully
                                                    arranged bouquet of words?
                                                   Will you accept me,
                                                   Lord,
                                                       as I really am,
messed up mixture of glory and grime?

Summer Field" Meditation

Take a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Allow your body to just let go.

Become aware of any tension in your body
and just breathe into that area for a moment.....

Now as you take in each breath say to
yourself "I am.." and as you breathe out say to yourself "relaxed", in "I
am"....out "relaxed", "I am....relaxed".

Just allow your mind and body to be peaceful,
if thoughts come just let them pass and go back to focussing on your breath,
as it now gently flows in through your nose notice the coolness of the
air just as it enters your nostrils.............

"I am relaxed".......

Now picture yourself in a beautiful meadow,
surrounded by wildflowers, you can hear birds a little way off
and you know that you are completely safe.

You can feel the warmth of the sun on your face and body.
As you gently lay down on the soft grass and feel supported
by the earth and warmed by the sun

You know that you have everything you need.

Your mind, body and spirit are happy healthy and relaxed......

Just lie here for a moment and enjoy this wonderful place of peace and calm.

Now when you are ready just breathe a little more deeply,
feel the vital flow of energy through your body as you gently come back to the room
and continue on with your day refreshed and energised,
knowing that you can return to your special place of calm anytime
you want just by recalling it.

EFTHEMIA

Picture
Efthemia is a Greek name meaning hope.

"Love wants to reach out and manhandle us,
Break all our teacup talk of God.
If you had the courage and
Could give the Beloved His choice, some nights,
He would just drag you around the room
By your hair,
Ripping from your grip all those toys in the world
                                                        That bring you no joy.
Love sometimes gets tired of speaking sweetly
And wants to rip to shreds
All your erroneous notions of truth . . .
                                                        The Beloved sometimes wants
To do us a great favour:
                                                        Hold us upside down
And shake all the nonsense out."

LAELYNN

Picture
Laelynn is a Canadian name meaning hope.

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart
and try to love the questions themselves,
like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue.
Do not now seek the answers,
which cannot be given you
because you would not be able to live them.
And the point is,
to live everything.
Live the questions now.
Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it,
live along some distant day into the answer.”

                                                    Rainer Maria Rilke

CHARISE

Picture
Charise is a French name meaning hope.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must - but don't you quit.
Life is queer with it's twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out,
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow ...
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man.
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And her learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out.
The silver tint to the clouds of doubt -
And you can never tell how close you are,
                                         It may appear when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!

"The most basic and powerful way
to connect to another person is to listen.
Just listen.
Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention ....

to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words."

NADINE

"Just for Today" are wonderful words of advice for caregivers
to take time today, not worry about tomorrow and do a deed to feel
good about yourself. It involves taking time for yourself.

 Just for today ...
I will live through the next 12 hours
and not try to tackle all of life's problems at  once.

Just for today ...
I will improve my mind. I will learn something useful.
I will read something that requires thought and concentration.

                                                    Just for today ...
I will be agreeable. I will look my best,
speak in a well-modulated voice, be courteous and considerate.

                                 Just for today ...
I will not find fault with friend, relative or colleague.
I will not try to change or improve anyone but myself.

                                                    Just for today ...
I will do a good deed and keep it a secret.  If anyone finds out, it won't count.

                                                    Just for today ...
I will have a program.  I might not follow it exactly, but I will have it.
I will save myself from two enemies: hurry & indecision.

                                                    Just for today ...
I will do two things I don't want to do, just because I need the discipline.

                                 Just for today ...
                                                    I will believe in myself.
I will give my best to the world and feel confident
that the world will give it's best to me.

A Gift

I was given a gift, wrapped shabbily,
it was non-returnable, non-refundable!
Reluctantly I accepted it.

In it I found courage I never knew existed
and a patience far beyond anything ever experienced.

I was given the ability to trust a stranger with that most dear to me,
and an endurance for the unknown.

I was given unconditional love of family and friends,
always there, never stopping, never faltering.

I was given many prayers from far and wide,
and the warmth of knowing I am truly cared about.

I was given a fond farewell of my modesty and vanity,
and the acceptance and love of an imperfect body.

I was given a strong shoulder to lean on when that shoulder
                                                 had once grown distant,
and laughter and good times, more special than ever before.

I was given many new friends,
wonderful, courageous women I am so very proud to know.

I was given warm sunshine and beautiful green grass,
blue skies, and sparkling city lights.

I was given things to see,
                                                 that once before were ignored.

I was given the chance to wake up,
                                                 instead of sleepwalking through life.

I was given every glorious day to enjoy,
every month to savour, every year to rejoice.

I was given the gift of life,
                                                 I was given breast cancer.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician, Healer of the Sick.

We call upon you and ask your help for our loved ones
who are suffering from cancer.
We entrust them to your loving care.
They are your children and they are in pain.
Give them the ability to know in their hearts
that you are with them in this difficult time.

                                            Give them strength and healing.
                                            Comfort them in their fears,
                                            soothe their anxiety,
and let them rest securely in your arms.

Help those who care for them.
Give insight to researchers that they may discover cures.
Give patience and energy to doctors and nurses so that
they will care for them with grace and love.

For us, their families, their friends and their community,
we need your courage and strength,
to be with them and help them bear their burdens.

Give us joy, peace and confidence in you
so that like Mary, your mother,
we may stand with them in faith and trust,
                                            witnessing to your healing love.

For you are blessed, for ever and ever.
                                           Amen.
