Julie Has Flown North For The Summer
In 2006, my daughter, Julie, left for five months working as a camp counselor
and studying art in the north-east of the United States of America.
I made this doll, who lives some of the time in a cocoon made with English Leicester,
to reflect on her leaving after twenty years at home.
This is not a photo image of Julie but rather some of the attributes I treasure in her.
The tiara speaks of her creativity.
She wore one she made of No.8 wire for her 19th birthday.
She holds a bubble-maker to remind me of her giftedness and joy in working with young people.
In the other hand is a pearl in a cocoon,
for Julie has the innate capacity to see the 'pearl' in those she meets, regardless of the externals.
She wears op-shop boots, for she is a dedicated supporter of recycled goods.
The tutu recollects her work with Jill Walker and The Travelling Tuatara, local community artists.
And the pink?
Well, Julie HATES pink but it honours the book she crafted for my 50th birthday,
where she said, "Pink is good."
I adapted a pattern for a modular doll designed by elinor peace bailey in her book "Mother Plays With Dolls."
