Catherine Fitzgerald (nee Ward) was born in 1893
to English missionaries living in Tahiti.
Her parents were killed in a hurricane which devastated Tahiti in February, 1906.
There were 150 deaths and more than $1,000,000 in damages.
Catherine married Dougal Fitzgerald in 1913.
Catherine was a large amiable, hard-working woman.
She was always available to lend a hand to those in need.
Catherine worked alongside Dougal in the chandlery
until the birth of their first son, Charles, in 1914.
Dougal went to war in 1914.
Before his return in 1918,
Charles died from Spanish Influenza.
A steamer docked in Papeete with the deadly disease.
One in seven islanders died.
They had 4 more children after the war:

Mark b. 1921
Nancy b. 1923
Gertrude b. 1925.
