Eliza Mahoney was born in 1897 to freed Negro slaves.
Her parents were tireless supporters of human rights.
Eliza worked alongside them in soup kitchens.
It was there she met Deidre Brennan.
Deidre offered her a scholarship to study nursing.
So Eliza gained a Diploma in Nursing from the School of Nursing, New England.
This later became the Hospital for Women and Children in Boston.
The facility trained people of all races and social classes.
Eliza and Deidre worked alongside each other throughout their working lives.
After her parents' death,
Eliza came to live with Deidre.

For reflection ...
Eliza was the daughter of freed slaves.
Do I judge people by where they come from,
or where they live, or who they associate with?
Do I treat all people with respect and dignity?
