She was the 2nd daughter of Clarence and Gabrielle Brennan.
Her mother died while she was young,
and the family moved to Boston.
In 1907, Mary entered university.
She studied law at the Portia Law School in New England.
This school offered a legal education exclusively to women from 1908.
