Henare Brennan was born in 1889.
He was the first child of Aidan and Marama Brennan,
and also the first grandchild of Silas and Grace Brennan to be born in New Zealand.
Henare was raised by his mother's paternal aunt and uncle
in a rural community in the Bay of Plenty.
It was from them he learned first hand of the traditions and crafts of the Maori.
He was conscripted to serve in WW1 in 1917,
but never saw active service overseas.
He went to the School of Maori Arts and Crafts
when it opened in Rotorua in 1927.
By then he was married to Aroha Potiki.
They had 3 children:
Ngaio b. 1919
Arapeta b. 1920
Matiu b. 1921.

For reflection ...
Henare was raised by his great aunt and uncle.
How different would his upbringing have been to that of his siblings
who were raised together by their parents?
