in myself;
in others;
in creation;
in tragedy and triumph;
in laughter and tears;
in cacophony and in silence;
in activity and in pause.
Creativity grows out of this attentiveness to the heartbeat of God.

I believe creativity is a response to listening to the heartbeat of God ... in myself; in others; in creation; in tragedy and triumph; in laughter and tears; in cacophony and in silence; in activity and in pause. Creativity grows out of this attentiveness to the heartbeat of God.

Many of us strive for perfection ... for the perfect image, or body shape, or work of art. However, many of us are now recognising the magnificence of imperfection, the beauty in the old, the used and reused, the cracked and forgotten, the battered and alienated, the ageing and the dying. This includes our stories ... our narrative, which forms and reforms, the beautiful, the magnificent, the beloved, human being we are today. I saw a falling star last night ... or perhaps it was a shooting star. I was filled with awe. There is something inspirational about events such as this ... unable to be predicted, fleeting, illuminating. I wanted to catch it ... place it near my heart ... let its wonderfulness overwhelm me. We are called to be what we are created to be. We are invited to speak with our own unique voice. We are empowered to overcome obstacles and nay-sayers. It takes courage and faith to become fully ourselves, fully human. We don't have to work big .. or with expensive materials. There is something very challenging and inspiring about working within a certain size or format or theme. Working small often forces us to seek the essentials; to revise and refine our concepts; to be innovative and ... creative. I work within parameters now and then ... for The Prayer Flag Project and The Inner Child series. Here the Darwin Visual Art Association used a match box as their common element. Enjoy!! http://darwinvisualartsassociation.blogspot.com.au/ We rarely know how our actions, however small, will affect others. Perhaps others will be encouraged, or strengthened, or motivated, or empowered. Sometimes the action we take is automatic for us. Sometimes it may require an effort, a step outside of our comfort zone. But each of our actions has an effect ... on ourselves, on those we encounter, perhaps on people we have never met. Who remembers when we forget?
Who speaks from our heart? Who understands? Who cares? It is important to have dreams. They inspire action and commitment. They encourage us to explore possibility. They demand we implement a plan and work towards a goal. Dreams don't have to be big ... any dream will do. I am constantly amazed by the immense variety of creative interpretation.
You would think there would be finite number of images for Jesus ... but even a similar shape and purpose can be stunningly different. Graham Sutherland designed the woven tapestry dossal for Coventry Cathedral. Beverley Shore Bennett designed a patchwork dossal with a similar theme but dramatically different. Wellington City, New Zealand, is being rocked by earthquakes.
Living through these tremors, being woken at 3.15am with my bed shaking, I have a greater understanding and empathy for those in Christchurch, New Zealand, who have lived with them since September, 2010. |
