Introducing ... Evangeline, yet another enraged woman on a black and white dog writing wrongs11/9/2014 Evangeline is my third interpretation of a pattern by elinor peace bailey.
Who are the women in our lives who have righted wrongs, challenged the status quo, remedied inequalities and injustices? How do we honour these women? Who are the women whose fierce determination have changed the course of our lives?
Female relatives, perhaps, who emigrated to a new land and created a new life. Women who have entered male-dominated professions to make monumental discoveries, such as Marie Curie. Women who have challenged the patriarchy to gain equality for women, such as Kate Shepherd. Ordinary women who have done extra-ordinary things to fundamentally change the way we live, such as Rosa Parks. Compassionate women who have seen a need and met it, despite institutional opposition, such as Mother Teresa or Mary MacKillop. Let's remember and cherish these amazing women. This is a doll (and dog) designed by elinor peace bailey in 1993.
I have used the dog pattern but used my own for the doll. The pattern was given to me by a neighbour who was given it by a friend. The joy is shared :-) elinor wrote about 'The Enraged Woman on the Black and White Dog Writing Wrongs': "I've wanted this image out of my head since someone told me she had seen "Beware of the day when women become enraged" on a tee shirt. I loved it. I kept seeing vast numbers of women shaking their collective fist at being abused, neglected, and simply ignored. Generations of women - mute, without political power, unrecognised in history and the arts - rising up and with mighty voices, reclaiming what was taken from them. Everything from dolls to language, to their bodies." |
