The reasons we begin an arts or crafts practice are many and varied -
a need within ourselves;
an 'aha' moment when we know we have found a voice;
tradition or expectation or fashion;
exhibitions or displays or artists' talks and books which ignite the creative spirit;
serendipity.
The reasons we continue this practice can be quite different, especially after we have mastered a basic skill set or become impassioned.
Our art and craft may make a political statement;
it may express compassion and empathy;
it may speak to others or for others;
it may fill a void within ourselves;
it may create community.
And why do some people cease an arts practice altogether or make a dramatic change?
Boredom, ennui, burn-out, expectation, self-criticism, dissatisfaction, financial restrictions, ill-health, life changes. There will be as many answers to all these questions as their are artists, artisans and craftspeople.
